When engineers select woven gabion mesh, the first question is often whether to use a five-twist or double-twisted design. The more useful question is: What structural behaviour does the project require?
At Fande, we provide both five-twist and double-twisted woven gabion mesh solutions for civil, hydraulic, geotechnical, road, slope-protection and landscape applications. We select the structure together with the wire diameter, mesh opening, coating, edge reinforcement, lacing system, unit dimensions, fill stone and site conditions.
In general, we recommend double-twisted mesh when flexibility, non-raveling behaviour and tolerance of controlled local movement are important. We consider five-twist mesh when the project requires a more closely integrated woven configuration and when the engineer's design calls for its specific stress-distribution and stability characteristics. Neither design is automatically better for every project.
Both designs use woven steel wire to create a flexible hexagonal mesh system. The principal difference is the way adjacent wires are twisted and interconnected along the mesh opening.
A double-twisted gabion mesh uses paired wires twisted together to form a non-raveling hexagonal mesh. If a local wire is damaged, the surrounding twisted construction can help limit immediate propagation of the opening. It provides an important level of continuity for gabion baskets and mattresses.
A five-twist gabion mesh uses a more tightly repeated twisting arrangement. The additional twist changes the interaction between adjacent wires and can produce a closely woven configuration with a different response to tension, local movement and stone confinement.
Selection factor | Double-twisted gabion mesh | Five-twist gabion mesh |
Basic structural emphasis | Flexible, non-raveling | Closely integrated woven configuration with a different twist pattern |
Typical reason to consider it | uneven settlement and flexible erosion protection | More uniform stress distribution and overall integration where specified by design |
Common project directions | Riverbanks, revet mattresses, ecological slopes and flexible retaining systems | Retaining structures, gravity-type protection and high embankments |
Standard consideration | ASTM A975 directly addresses double-twisted gabions and revet mattresses | Confirm the applicable national, regional or project-specific standard and test requirements |
The twist pattern is only one part of gabion durability. We select corrosion protection according to the water, soil, salt, humidity, abrasion, ultraviolet and temperature conditions expected at the site.
We provide galvanized, zinc-aluminum-alloy-coated and polymer-coated woven gabion mesh options. We can discuss metallic coatings and additional PVC or PE protection for projects with higher corrosion or exposure requirements.
A useful selection sequence is:
• Identify the exposure category, including salt spray, immersion, industrial contamination and wet-dry cycling.
• Obtain water and soil chemistry where corrosion may be significant.
• Define the required wire diameter, tensile properties and coating system.
A flexible mesh can accommodate some controlled movement, but it cannot correct an unstable foundation. Before selecting five-twist or double-twisted mesh, the project should evaluate bearing resistance, settlement, slope geometry, scour, groundwater and the consequences of movement.
The base should be excavated, trimmed and compacted according to the approved design. Soft pockets and uncontrolled fill should be corrected or treated. The first course must have the required line, level and bearing condition.
Gabion units are permeable, but the surrounding soil can still experience erosion or water pressure if the filter and surface drainage are poorly designed. A geotextile or graded filter may be needed between the gabion and backfill to limit the migration of fine particles.
Surface drainage should prevent concentrated runoff from passing behind the protection. Subsurface drains, outlets, toe details and scour protection should follow the project drawings.
The fill stone must be durable, appropriately graded and sufficiently large to remain within the mesh. We recommend confirming the stone source before finalizing the mesh specification because stone size affects filling efficiency, unit weight, appearance and resistance to hydraulic displacement.
We can provide product information for double-twisted and five-twist woven gabion mesh, together with the relevant configuration details for the buyer's review. We encourage customers to confirm the final product against the project engineer's drawings and the contract specification before placing a production order.
For international procurement, we recommend requesting:
• wire and coating information;
• mesh opening, dimensions and tolerances;
• edge wire, lacing wire, stiffener and fastener details;
• inspection, quality and shipment documents.
At Fande, we provide both five-twist and double-twisted woven gabion mesh solutions. We can assist you in compiling the product specifications required for technical reviews; please feel free to contact our engineers for further product information.
Can both designs be galvanized or polymer-coated?
Coating availability depends on the product configuration and manufacturer's production capability. At Fande, we provide galvanized, zinc-aluminum-alloy-coated and polymer-coated woven gabion mesh options for different exposure conditions. The final coating should be selected using the project's corrosion environment, abrasion risk, ultraviolet exposure and required durability.
Can double-twisted mesh adapt to foundation settlement?
Double-twisted mesh is commonly selected for its flexibility and ability to accommodate some controlled local movement. It cannot compensate for excessive settlement, foundation failure or global slope instability. Site investigation and geotechnical design remain necessary.
Can Fande provide a custom five-twist or double-twisted configuration?
We can review project requirements and provide available product configurations for technical evaluation. Customization depends on the required mesh opening, wire diameter, coating, unit dimensions, accessories, quantity and production feasibility. The final configuration should be approved against the project drawings and applicable standard before production.
