In water conservancy projects, highway slope protection, and landscape architecture, gabion baskets have become the preferred solution in the global engineering community due to their excellent permeability, flexible structure, and ecological compatibility. However, faced with a dazzling array of technical parameters (such as wire diameter, aperture, and coating), how to select the most suitable specifications based on project requirements?
Ⅰ. Two main structural classifications of gabion mesh
1. Double-Twisted Hexagonal Gabion Mesh
This mesh is mechanically woven to form a hexagonal mesh structure. Its most significant characteristic is its excellent flexibility, allowing it to adapt to ground settlement without cracking.
Common Mesh Sizes: 60x80mm, 80x100mm, 100x120mm.
Applications: Riverbank protection, embankment slope protection, debris flow control.
2. Welded Gabion Mesh
Made by high-frequency resistance welding of longitudinal and transverse wires. It features a flat surface, robust structure, and excellent visual stability.
Common mesh sizes: 50x50mm, 75x75mm, 50x100mm, 100x100mm.
Applications: Building exterior walls, landscaping, retaining wall projects.
Ⅱ. Core material and anti-corrosion coating standards
The corrosion resistance of gabion mesh directly affects the safety cycle of the entire project. When selecting materials, the following four mainstream coating standards should be considered, taking into account the soil pH, humidity, and salt spray environment of the project site:
1. Electro-Galvanized: Electro-galvanized gabion mesh has a low zinc coating, typically only around 10g/m².
Applicable Scenarios:Recommended only for interior decoration, exhibition display,or very short-term temporary project. Not recommended for water conservancy projects or permanent retaining walls.
2. Hot-dipped galvanized: Through a hot-dip process, the zinc coating can range from 245g/m² to 300g/m², depending on requirements.
Applicable scenarios:Suitable for conventional dryland retaining walls, riverbank protection, and general landscape fencing.
3. Galfan (Zn-5%Al-MM): Galfan is a zinc-aluminum alloy coating containing 5% aluminum, and is currently the standard for high-end international engineering projects.
Applicable scenarios: Long-term harsh outdoor working conditions, riverbeds frequently subjected to erosion, and national-level infrastructure projects with extremely high lifespan requirements.
4. PVC/PE Plastic Coating: An additional layer of PVC or PE plastic protective film is wrapped around the surface of hot-dip galvanized steel or Galfan steel.
Applicable Scenarios: Industrial wastewater treatment ponds with strong acids and alkalis, marine environments with high salt spray such as estuaries, or river greening projects that emphasize ecological aesthetics.
Ⅲ. Key parameter description: Matching of wire diameter and mesh size
• Mesh Wire: The wire diameter of the main structure of the gabion mesh, typically 2.0mm - 4.0mm.
• Selvedge Wire: Considering the greater stress on the edges, the edge wire is usually 0.5mm - 1.0mm thicker than the mesh wire.
• Lacing Wire: Used for assembly and connection, typically 2.2mm thick.
Tip: The size of the stones should be kept between 1.5 and 2 times the mesh size to prevent stones from slipping or the mesh cage from deforming excessively.
Conclusion
Understanding the specifications and materials of gabion mesh is essential for ensuring project safety. By configuring parameters appropriately, you can effectively reduce procurement and maintenance costs while meeting project strength requirements.
